These tips apply whether shopping online or in person: Check out these tips for keeping your debit and credit card information more secure.

  1. Do not use public WiFi for shopping activity.
  2. Only make purchases from retailers you know and trust. Websites with https are secure and safe to use.
  3. Consider what the product normally costs. Should a price seem to good to be true, it probably is a bait and switch tactic to get your information.
  4. Consider paying through your smartphone. Just link your card to your smartphone and pay online without reaching for your plastic. Best of all, mobile pay transactions involve an extra layer of encryption so the vendor never receives your card number.
  5. Keep systems up-to-date. Automatic updates improve security by patching vulnerabilities to your information.
  6. Use strong and unique passwords including a combination of numbers, upper and lower case letters and special characters. Do not use the same password for multiple sites.
  7. Avoid saving your information online while shopping. Including user names, passwords and card numbers.
  8. Be mindful of what information websites are asking for. If the information requested seems strange or out of the ordinary, consider using another site.
  9. Think before you click. Be mindful that while many stores are running specials and offering coupons, some emails and offers are scams.
  10. Monitor your financial accounts and look for any unfamiliar purchases.
